History

The idea was started by Norfolk, Virginia developer Vernon Myers and his son Vernon Jr. in 1969 as Econo-Travel and was joined by local businessman Lloyd Tarbutton.

Tarbutton took on the project, found investors and money, and did extensive market research to see if the concept would work. The channel’s mascot in its early days was “Sandy”, a girl in a short tartan skirt and tam. The first hotel, still in operation at 865 North Military Highway in Norfolk, was built for $275,000. His daily room rate was $7 for singles, $9 for doubles, and $11 for four.

Tarbutton sold the chain, which had 306 locations, in 1983 for $836 million. He began renaming all areas, the Econo Lodge, in the late 1970s. The brand had its ups and downs and multiple owners after the founders sold.
