It has two primary purposes: letting several devices share an Internet connection and controlling traffic across these networks by sending data packets to the correct IP addresses.

There are several types of routers, but most transfer data between LANs (local area networks) and WANs (wide area networks).

A network system (LAN) is a collection of link devices confine to a particular region. Typically just one router is needed for a LAN.

On the other hand, WANs are massive networks disperse over a large geographic region.

Therefore, the requirement for distinct LANs for each site will be necessary, for example, for large organisations and businesses with offices spread out across the nation.

Consider a router as a controller for air traffic and data packets as the vehicles travelling to different airports (or networks).

Just like each plane has a particular destination and follows a specific course, each package must transport to its destination as soon as possible.

Similar to how an air traffic controller ensures that aeroplane arrive at their destinations without getting lost or encounter significant delays on route, a router aids in routing data packets to their proper IP address.

An internal routing table, a collection of routes to different network destinations, is use by a router to guide packets effective. Also, to ascertain a packet’s goal, the router first scans its header.

The Differences Between Modem And Router

Although some Internet service providers (ISPs) may combine into a single device, a router and a modem are two independent things.

It is because each performs a unique but equally significant function for networks to connected and the Internet.

A modem links these networks to the Internet, while a router creates them and controls the data flow inside and between them.

Also, modems transform signals from an ISP into digital signals that any connected device can understand to establish a connection to the Internet.

And to connect to the Internet, a single device can plug into a modem; alternatively, a router can allow several devices to share this signal.

Types of Routers

A router must first talk with a modem to connect a LAN to the Internet. There are primarily two methods for doing this:

Wi-Fi : Ethernet cable links a wireless to a modem. It disseminates data by turning binary code packets into radio signals, which are wirelessly transmitte via antennas. Instead of establishing LANs, wireless routers build WLANs (wireless local area networks), which link several devices together through wireless communication.

Wired : Like a wireless, a wired router connects to a modem using an Ethernet connection. Then it establishes a LAN and links various wires to connect to one or more networked devices.

Wireless and Wired Routers for Small LANs:

Central router: A core is use by significant firms and enterprises that transfer many data packets within their network, in contrast to those used within a household or small company LAN. Core routers don’t interact with other networks; they work at the “core” of a network.

Border router: An edge router connects with core routers and external networks, in contrast to a core router, which handles all data traffic inside an extensive network. Edge routers operate at the “edge” of a network and communicate with other LANs and WANs using the BGP (Border Gateway Protocol).
